2024 marks thirty years since the landmark International Conference on Population and Development, where 179 countries signed onto the ICPD Programme of Action, placing universal access to reproductive health and rights at the heart of sustainable development. The climate crisis poses significant challenges to this promise. Evidence demonstrates that as temperatures rise, extreme weather events become more frequent, ecosystems are disrupted, women and girls in all their intersecting identities face heightened risks to their health and well-being, including impacts on their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). A recent study from India found extreme heat exposure doubles the risk of stillbirth and miscarriage, and another recent analysis of nearly 5,000 households in Kenya found a 60% increase in intimate partner violence in counties that experienced a severe weather event.

Those who contribute the least to the climate crisis and are the most marginalized, are also the most impacted, particularly girls, adolescents and women. Yet, in conversations about climate and health as well as gender and climate, there is little acknowledgement of the multiple linkages between climate change and SRHR, including how fulfilling SRHR promotes climate resilience. Many actors, from national governments to global feminist coalitions to local communities, are currently working on how best to respond, finance, measure, operationalize and scale climate-resilient solutions that are inclusive, equitable and gender-responsive to ensure that the global progress in SRHR continues for all women and girls, and is not rolled back.

The Population Council, Women Deliver, Panorama Global and YLabs cordially invite you to a side event during the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD57) to hear from practitioners, governments, and advocates who have been working at the nexus of climate, gender and SRHR. Please join us for a lively discussion about this emerging work with a vibrant panel of speakers, including Ambassador Noemi Espinoza Madrid, Chair of CPD57.
